From Proto-Turkic *oj-n-a-ar; morphologically оонньоо (oonnyoo, to play, affirmative stem) +‎ -ор (-or, present participle-forming suffix).

Cognate with Tuvan ойнаар (oynaar), Khakas ойнир (oynir), Southern Altai ойноор (oynoor), Kazakh ойнар (oinar), Turkish oynar, etc.
