From Proto-Mordvinic *päľkə, from Proto-Finno-Permic *pälkä. Akin to Finnish peukalo, Livonian pēgal, Lule Sami bielgge, Kildin Sami пе̄лльк (piell’k), Udmurt пӧлы (pöly).
