Borrowed from Classical Persian فیل (fīl), from Arabic فِيلٌ (fīlun), from Middle Persian pyl (/⁠pīl⁠/), from Akkadian 𒄠𒋛 (/⁠pīru⁠/). Compare also Bashkir фил (fil), Tatar фил (fil), Azerbaijani fil, Turkish fil, etc.
