Etymology 1[edit]

A grammaticalized resultant participle of соля́ (soljá, to salten) +‎ -ен (-en). Superseded an ealier слан (slan) (still found in dialects) from Proto-Slavic *solnъ. Compare Russian солёный (soljónyj).
