From Proto-Mordvinic *uŕə, from Proto-Finno-Permic *orja, possibly borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *áryas (Aryan) (compare Slav : slave). Cognates include Finnish orja, Estonian ori, and Udmurt вар (var).
