Inherited from Proto-Slavic *učьstivъ. By surface analysis, у- (u-) +‎ чтить (čtitʹ, to honour, respect) +‎ -и́вый (-ívyj). Cognate with Polish uczciwy (honest), Czech uctivý (respectful), Serbo-Croatian у̀чтив (polite), Old Church Slavonic оучьтивъ (učĭtivŭ).
