Etymology[edit]

Standardized form of dialectal а́луга (áluga), а́ла̣га (álạga), from Proto-Slavic *xalǫga (whence Old Church Slavonic халѫга (xalǫga, hedge)). Further origin unclear. Perhaps from the root of Bulgarian ха́лост (hálost, futility), ха́лтав (háltav, loose) + -уга (-uga).
