Derived from Proto-Iranian *hawHma-arya-kah (haoma of the Aryans) by Abaev.

Some other sources place the ultimate origin of the word (found across a vast stretch of Eurasia) to Germanic or Turkic, see Old Norse humli and Proto-Turkic *kumlak respectively.
