Etymology[edit]

Probably borrowed from Polish szlifować, from Middle High German slīfen.[1] By surface analysis, шліф (šlif) +‎ -ува́ти (-uváty). Compare Russian шлифова́ть (šlifovátʹ), Belarusian шліфава́ць (šlifavácʹ), German schleifen.

шліфува́ти (šlifuvátyimpf (perfective пошліфува́ти) (transitive)

  1. to grind (to remove material by rubbing with an abrasive surface)
  2. to sand (to abrade the surface of (something) with sand or sandpaper in order to smooth or clean it)
  3. to burnish, to polish (to make bright, shiny, and smooth by rubbing)
    Synonym: полірува́ти impf (poliruváty)
  4. (figuratively) to polish (to refine; remove imperfections from)
