From Proto-Permic *šuni, possibly from Proto-Finno-Permic *šoke-. Possible cognates include Finnish hokea (to repeat).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian шуны (šuny), Komi-Permyak шуны (šuny) and Komi-Yazva шунө (šunå).
