Etymology[edit]

Calque of Classical Mongolian ᠶ᠋ᠣᠰᠤᠲᠠᠢ (yosutai). By surface analysis, ёзу (yozu, custom) +‎ -луг (-lug, ornative suffix), literally with custom. Compare Mongolian ёстой (jostoj), Khamnigan Mongol ёсотой (josotoj), Buryat ёһотой (johotoj), Kalmyk йоста (yosta).
