Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Turkic *yeŋe (elder brother's wife).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (jengä, older male relative's wife); Kazakh жеңге (jeñge), Kyrgyz жеңе (jeŋe), Uyghur يەڭگە (yengge), Khakas ниге (nige), Yakut саҥас (sañas, older male relative's wife).
