From Proto-Turkic *koyu-g (thick, dense).

Cognate with Kazakh қою (qoü, thick), Uzbek quyuq (thick), Uyghur قويۇق (qoyuq, thick), Turkish koyu (dense, dark in color), Khakas хойығ (xoyığ, thick), Tuvan хоюг (xoyug, thick), Yakut хойуу (qoyuu, thick), etc.
