From Common Kypchak ögüz "ox", from Proto-Turkic *öküŕ (ox).

Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰈𐰛𐰈𐰕 (öküz, ox); Tatar үгез (ügez), Kazakh өгіз (ögız), Karachay-Balkar ёгюз (ögüz), Kyrgyz өгүз (ögüz, ox), Uzbek hoʻkiz, Turkish öküz (ox), etc.
