From Proto-Indo-European *wēlH-, from *welH- (to turn, wind), whence also գելում (gelum). For the sense "stone for throwing" compare especially Ancient Greek ὅλμος (hólmos, round, smooth stone), Russian валу́н (valún, boulder), from the same source.
