Etymology[edit]

From դաշն (dašn, gentle, soft) +‎ ամուր (amur, strong). Calque of Italian pianoforte, composed of piano (soft) + forte (loud, strong) (so called because of the ability to vary the tone of the piano, as opposed to harpsichord).
