Etymology[edit]

A Northeast Caucasian borrowing. Compare Avar сини (sini), Bezhta сино (sino), Tsakhur суна (suna), Rutul сын (sɨn), Hunzib сыну (sɨnu) etc all meaning "barberry". Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *ḱeno- and cognate with Ancient Greek κενός (kenós).[1][2][3] An Armeno–Greek isogloss.

Ačaṙyan considers synonymous ոսին (osin) an alternative form, without explaining the ո- (o-).[2]
