Formed in Mishnaic times from סְפוֹג (s'fóg, sponge), from Ancient Greek σπόγγος (spóngos) or σφόγγος (sphóngos).

Verb[edit]

סָפַג (safág) third-singular masculine past (pa'al construction, passive counterpart נִסְפַּג)

  1. to absorb ("to suck up or drink in").
  2. to absorb ("to include so that it no longer has separate existence").
  3. to receive something negative.
    הסרט ספג הרבה ביקורות רעות.The film received a lot of bad reviews.haséret safág harbé bikórót raút.
  4. (sports) to have a goal capture by the opposing team (in sports such as football or hockey.)
