From Middle Low German Swêde, from a Germanic word akin to Old English Swēoþēod (Swede-people), itself from Swēon (Swedes) (Old Norse Svíar), from Proto-Germanic *swihô (Swede). Cognate with Dutch Zweed, German Schwede.
