From Middle High German stimme, from Old High German stimma, stimna, from Proto-Germanic *stebnō, from Proto-Indo-European *stemn- (mouth, muzzle). Cognate with German Stimme, Dutch stem, Icelandic stefna, Greek στόμα (stóma).
