Etymology[edit]

Probably from Parthian, from Old Iranian; composed of *upa- (on, to) + *sta- (stand, stay, remain). Compare Manichaean Middle Persian ʾbyst (abest, place of refuge), Old Armenian ապաստան (apastan, shelter, refuge).
