Etymology[edit]

Vulgarized form of Persian روزه (ruze, fasting); compare other Turkic borrowings, like Azerbaijani oruc, Kazakh ораза (oraza), Kyrgyz орозо (orozo), Tatar ураза (uraza) and Uzbek roʻza.
