From the root ب ت ل (b-t-l), from Proto-Semitic *batūl-. Compare Hebrew בְּתוּלָה (bəṯulá, chaste (woman)), Ugaritic 𐎁𐎚𐎍𐎚 (btlt), Aramaic בְּתוּלְתָּא (bəṯūltā).
