A development from Proto-Turkic *teker (hoop, circle); cognate with Bashkir тәгәрмәс (təgərməs), Karakhanid تَكْرَكْ (tekrek), Kyrgyz тегерек (tegerek), Southern Altai тегерик (tegerik), Tatar тәгәрмәч (tägärmäç) and Yakut тиэрбэс (tierbes).
