Arabic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From the root ذ ي ل (ḏ-y-l), an augment of the root ذ ل ل (ḏ-l-l), meaning "to be low", "to be in low-esteem". The sense of "a shelter or protection" stems from the use of this root to describe weaker tribes that needed the support of stronger allies; contrasted with و ل ي (w-l-y).
