Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian [script needed] (pldp /⁠frēb-⁠/, to deceive), from Proto-Iranian *fra- + *dab- (to deceive), the latter from Proto-Indo-European *dʰebʰ- (to harm, deceive) and cognate with Sanskrit दभ् (dabh, to harm, deceive) and Hittite [script needed] (tepnu-, to decrease, to humble).
