Etymology[edit]

First attested in c. 1534 as Middle Hindi ملیامیٹ (mlyāmeṭ /⁠mlyāmyṭ⁠/), from ملی (milī, found) +‎ ا (ā) +‎ میٹ، میٹا/مٹانا (meṭ, meṭā, miṭānā, erased). Unrelated to English eliminate or annihilate. Compare Punjabi مِلِیامیٹ (milīyāmeṭ).
