Borrowed from Old Anatolian Turkish, being a compound of مهدی (the Mahdi) +‎ Old Anatolian Turkish قلی (the possessed form of قل (slave)), literally slave of the Mahdi; compare Azerbaijani Məhdiqulu, Chagatai مهدی‌قلی, Turkish Mehdikulu.
