Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian [script needed] (MKḆLWNtn' /⁠padīriftan⁠/), [script needed] (MKḆLWN /⁠padīr-⁠/), from a Proto-Iranian compound of *pati- and *grab- (to grab), the latter from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrebʰ-, whence also Sanskrit गृह्णाति (gṛhṇāti, he seizes), गृभ्णाति (gṛbhṇāti), and Proto-Germanic *grab- (whence English grab).[1]
