Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀧𑀬𑀁𑀲 (*payaṃsa), from Sanskrit *पदांश (padāṃśa, quarter part), from पद (pada, quarter) +‎ अंश (aṃśa, part, piece), in reference to the coin being worth a quarter of an anna.
