Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *čirik (rotten), a development of *čẹr (rot; disease), whence چورومك (çürümek, to rot, to decay). Cognate with Azerbaijani çürük, Bashkir серек (serek), Kazakh шірік (şırık), Kyrgyz чирик (cirik), Southern Altai чирик (čirik), Tatar черек (çerek), Uyghur چىرىك (chirik) and Uzbek chirik.
