From Proto-Indo-Aryan *cha(ṇ)ṭ-. Cognate with Punjabi ਛੰਡਣਾ (chaṇḍṇā, “to shake”), Hindi छाँटना (chā̃ṭnā) / Urdu چھانٹنا (chā̃ṭnā).
