Inherited from Old Punjabi ਕਢਿ (kaḍhi /⁠kaḍḍhi⁠/), from Prakrit 𑀓𑀟𑁆𑀠𑀇 (kaḍḍhaï), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀓𑀟𑁆𑀠𑀢𑀺 (*kaḍḍhati, to pull, draw). Cognate with Hindustani کاڑْھنا (kāṛhnā) / काढ़ना (kāṛhnā), Sindhi ڪَڍَڻُ / कढणु, Gujarati કાઢવું (kāḍhvũ), Marathi काढणे (kāḍhṇe), Maithili काढ़ब (kāṛhab) / 𑒏𑒰𑒜𑓃𑒥 (kāṛhaba), Nepali काढ्नु (kāḍhnu), Bengali কাড়া (kaṛa), Assamese কঢ়া (korha).
