Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian gwk’dy (gugāy). From Proto-Indo-European *wi (apart) + *kʷeḱ- (to see); literally meaning “to see apart, differentiate”. Compare Old Armenian վկայ (vkay), an Iranian borrowing.
