Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac ܐܘܪܕܥܐ. From the older form *ܥܦܪܕܥܐ (ʿəp̄ardəʿāʾ); related to Arabic ضِفْدَع (ḍifdaʕ) and Hebrew צְפַרְדֵּעַ (tz'fardéa). Displaced by ܦܸܩܥܵܐ (piqˁā) and ܥܲܩܪܘܼܩܵܐ (ˁaqrūqā).
