From a variant of Aramaic אִיסְטְוָונָא (ʾesṭwānā, column, pillar), from Middle Persian [script needed] (stwn' /⁠stūn⁠/, column, pillar); also borrowed into Arabic أُسْطُوَانَة (ʔusṭuwāna).
