Etymology[edit]
Learned borrowing from Aramaic יָאֵא (yāˀē, active participle of a defective verb, literally “it is fitting”).

- should, ought to indicating opinion, advice, or instruction, about what is required or desirable [+ ܕ- (object) = that]
- Synonyms: ܫܘܼܕ (šūd), ܓܵܪܲܓ (gārag), ܠܵܙܹܡ (lāzēm)
- ܝܵܐܹܐ ܠܘܼܟ݂ ܕܗܸܟ̰ ܠܹܐ ܪܵܘܹܝܬ ܘܛܵܪܹܝܬ. ― yāˀē lūḵ d-hič lē rāwēt w-ṭārēt. ― You should never drink and drive.

Usage notes[edit]
- While ܝܵܐܹܐ (yāˀē) is an adverb, it is used in much the same way as a present-tense verb; followed by its suffixes agreeing with the subject in person, gender, and number. Its corresponding past tense is expressed by ܘܵܠܹܐ (wālē) + ܗ݇ܘܵܐ/ܗ݇ܘܵܬ݇/ܗ݇ܘܵܘ (wā).
- This adverb is considered to be of low to medium modality; contrasted with ܘܵܠܹܐ (wālē, “must, have to”) which is stronger.
