From Ancient Greek κλεῖδα (kleîda), accusative singular form of κλείς (kleís), from Proto-Indo-European *kleh₂us (nail, pin, hook - instruments, of old use for locking doors). Compare Arabic إِقْلِيد (ʔiqlīd), Hebrew קְלִיד (qəlîḏ), Persian کلید (kelid), and Turkish kilit.
