Etymology[edit]

From the Sanskrit name अघ-नाशिनी (agha-nāśinī, literally destroyer of sin), which was originally applied to the Zuari River. The name was subsequently given to the village situated on its northern bank. Compare Kannada ಅಘನಾಶಿನಿ (aghanāśini), the name of a village in Karnataka named after a different river of the same name.
