Inherited from Old Hindi गुड (guḍa), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀕𑀼𑀟 (guḍa), from Sanskrit गुड (guḍá). Cognate to Punjabi ਗੁੜ (guṛ), Gujarati ગોળ (goḷ), Marathi गूळ (gūḷ), Bengali গুড় (guṛ).
