Sanskrit[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain.

Perhaps borrowed from Munda; however, the Munda derivations found in literature are based on an interpretation of चप् as originally meaning "to grind down", while "to soothe" seems to be the original meaning.

Not related to Vedic Sanskrit चप्य (capya, a kind of sacrificial vessel).

Pronunciation[edit]

Root[edit]

चप् (cap)

  1. to soothe; to caress; to console
  2. to knead; to pound
  3. to cheat
