Inherited from Sanskrit डाल (ḍāla). Cognate with Marathi डहाळा (ḍahāḷā), Punjabi ਡਾਲ (ḍāl).

Etymology[edit]

Of uncertain origin. Kuiper and Turner derive the word from a Munda language. However, Mayrhofer considers it more likely that the word arose from a "spontaneous" retroflexion of दल् (dal, to split) in Middle Indic.
