Usage notes[edit]

ना () is the subjunctive negation and it is only used with verbs which are in subjunctive mood.

Compare the imperative negation मत (mat) which is only used with verbs in imperative mood and the indicative negation नहीं (nahī̃) which is used with verbs in indicative mood.

It also acts as a confirmatory or rhetorical particle when placed at the end of phrases.
