McGregor suggests Sanskrit भगिन् (bhagin, good, prosperous).

Usage notes[edit]

Calling someone भई does not necessarily mean that they are your friend, and can be seen as patronizing in some contexts. It is also used as a general-purpose interjection meaning "hey!".
