Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Northwestern Indo-Aryan (whence Punjabi ਮੱਖੀ (makkhī)), from Prakrit 𑀫𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀺𑀆 (makkhiā), from Sanskrit मक्षिका (makṣikā), ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mákšiH (fly, bee). Cognate with Assamese মাখি (makhi), Bengali মাছি (machi), Gujarati માખી (mākhī). Displaced native Old Hindi माखी (mākhī) and माछी (māchī).
