Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mr̥ȷ́ʰúš, from Proto-Indo-European *mr̥ǵʰús (brief, short), formed from the root *mreǵʰ-. Cognate with Latin brevis (short), Ancient Greek βραχύς (brakhús, short), Russian бо́рзый (bórzyj, swift, brisk).
