Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Maybe from Proto-Indo-European *méldʰ-e-ti (to abandon);[1] or from *mel-dʰeh₁- an extension of *(s)mel- (false, bad);[2] or from an extension of *melh₂- (to grind, crush) (see there).
