From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hyawdʰáyati (“to engage in battle, cause to fight”), from Proto-Indo-European *Hyowdʰ-éye-ti. Cognate with Old Latin ioubeō (whence Latin iubeō).

     यद् वृ॒त्रं तव॑ चा॒शनिं॒ वज्रे॑ण स॒म् अयो॑धयः ।
     अहि॑म् इन्द्र॒ जिघां॑सतो दि॒वि ते॑ बद्बधे॒ शवोऽर्च॒न्न् अनु॑ स्व॒राज्यं॑ ॥

     yád vṛtráṃ táva cāśániṃ vájreṇa sam áyodhayaḥ.
     áhim indra jíghāṃsato diví te badbadhe śávóʼrcann ánu svarā́jyaṃ.

     When with the thunder thou didst make thy missile and Vṛtra meet in war,
     Thy might, O Indra, fain to slay the Dragon, was set firm in heaven, lauding thine own imperial sway.
