Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀳𑀝𑁆𑀝𑁆- (*haṭṭ-), from the Sanskrit roots अण्ठ् (aṇṭh, to go, move, tend) and/or हिण्ड् (hiṇḍ, to go, wander, roam about). Cognate to Gujarati હઠવું (haṭhvũ).
