Etymology

Probably vowel-harmonized from Middle Bengali *চারুলিয়া (*caruliẏa), from an earlier *চারৌলিয়া (*carōuliẏa), a compound of চার (car, four) +‎ ঔলিয়া (ōuliẏa, saints), such named due to the reverence of four medieval saints in the region.[1]
